    There is a very famous ancient solar observatory in Chaco Canyon, made by Native Americans long ago. They have a scroll etching (the "sun dagger") and the sunlight that passes through a cleft in the rocks makes a special pattern on the scroll at the equinoxes and solstices. For a neat explanation...
