    Re: ancient observatores

There is a very famous ancient solar observatory in Chaco Canyon, made by Native Americans long ago. They have a scroll etching (the "sun dagger") and the sunlight that passes through a cleft in the rocks makes a special pattern on the scroll at the equinoxes and solstices. For a neat explanation, go see http://www.exploratorium.edu/chaco/

     Hi Eileen,

One example of an ancient observatory in the United States is Chaco Canyon in New Mexico.  You can learn more here:

Another is the Bighorn Medicine Wheel in Montana.  You can learn more here: http://solar-center.stanford.edu/AO/bighorn.html

Unfortunately, I have not had the opportunity to visit either of these places. They look pretty neat, so maybe someday I will have to take a trip to see them!

    Hi Eileen,

Here are some ancient observatories as seen from space. Only one of them is in the US.
